Medial Branch Nerve Blocks (MBBs)

Medial Branch Nerves (MBNs) are the little nerves that supply the facet joints with pain fibers. When the facet joints haven’t been used for a while, the MBNs are the messengers that tell the brain that your neck or back is aching and feels stiff. When the MBNs that are associated with the facet joints causing your back to feel achy and stiff are blocked by your doctor, the aching and stiffness in your back will be temporarily relieved. This will provide your doctor with valuable diagnostic information. Usually, two to three sets of MBBs are performed to make sure the results are correct, but temporary,  before your doctor suggests a Radio Frequency Ablation procedure to provide you with long term relief.
